Man grit blasting and painting a fuel storage tank

Grit Blasting

Grit blasting is a mechanical cleaning process that uses spheres of material to remove oxides and other debris from the surface of another material.

Dirty, oxidized or otherwise unfinished material is undesirable for many reasons. Applying a coating to unclean materials can cause a lack of adhesion.

To ensure we maintain the overall quality of our tanks we have our own in-house shot blasting and painting facilities.

All our tanks are blasted to SA2.5. This removes any corrosion or contamination that might be present on the surface of the steel, preparing the steel for optimal paint adhesion.

What are the advantages of shot Blasting?

  • Like all paint applications the preparation of the surface is critical to ensuring the coating performs as intended. Surface cleaning of the tank with light abrasion and degreaser will not prepare the surface of the steel and will not give it the “key” required for the paint system to correctly adhere and create the correct impermeable barrier.
